Microsoft Carbon Emissions Jump 25% to 20 Million Metric Tons as AI Data Centers Drive Energy Demand

The jump is tied to data center construction for AI workloads. Scope 2 emissions from purchased electricity rose sharply after Microsoft stopped using unbundled renewable energy certificates, shifting from 2% to 13% of the company's total footprint. The company matched 100% of global electricity consumption with renewables and has signed PPAs for up to 40 GW across 26 countries, with 19 GW online. Microsoft remains the largest voluntary carbon removal buyer, accounting for 78.5% of durable CDR tonnes contracted by April 2026. But the 2030 carbon negative target looks harder to reach as emissions have risen for two straight years. The IEA projects global data center CO2 emissions could hit 300 million metric tons by 2035, nearly double current levels. Microsoft's report shows the tension between AI infrastructure buildout and climate goals is not going away.
