Deep Sky, a Canadian carbon removal developer, has issued the first certified direct air capture (DAC) carbon credits in North America. The credits were generated at the Deep Sky Alpha facility in Alberta, where CO2 is captured from the air and stored underground. Independent registry Isometric verified the removals using its Direct Air Capture Protocol and issued the credits to Microsoft and RBC under long-term purchase agreements. The credits are also the world's first DAC credits to carry the Core Carbon Principles (CCP) label. While the initial volume is small, the milestone shows DAC technology moving from pilot projects to commercial delivery. Deep Sky plans to build around 100 carbon removal facilities in Canada, using the country's renewable electricity and geological storage to scale toward one million tons of CO2 removal per site per year.

Agreed. The CCP label is a big deal for corporate buyers. Microsoft and RBC are basically signaling that they want high integrity credits, not just any offset.

What's the energy input for the Alpha facility? Alberta grid is still mostly gas. If they are running DAC on fossil power, the net removal math gets complicated.

Good question. Deep Sky says they plan to use renewable electricity and geological storage at scale. But for the pilot, I'd want to see the lifecycle accounting before calling it permanent removal.

Pilot volumes are tiny. 3,000 tons per year is nothing compared to what we need. But you have to start somewhere. At least they are actually injecting and not just selling forward contracts.
