Microsoft achieves water positive status five years early with AI data center cooling innovation

Microsoft reached water positive status in fiscal year 2025, replenishing more water than it used globally. The company cut data center water usage effectiveness from 2.3 liters per kWh in the early 2000s to 0.27 L/kWh in 2025, a nearly 90% reduction. AI-optimized data centers launched in 2024 use direct-to-chip liquid cooling with closed loops, consuming zero water for cooling during normal operations and saving over 125 million liters annually per facility. Microsoft now aims to reduce water intensity in owned data centers by 40% by 2030, with a 25% reduction already achieved. The company is expanding use of recycled and non-potable water, with facilities in Singapore using 99% alternative water sources. Rainwater harvesting programs are rolling out across new sites in Canada, the UK, and other regions.
