New research from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology shows that microplastic pollution could reduce the ocean's ability to absorb carbon dioxide. Phytoplankton, tiny marine algae that carry out nearly half of Earth's photosynthesis, are being harmed by plastic particles through toxicity, physical damage, and reduced sunlight. This disrupts the ocean's natural carbon pump, which stores about two billion tonnes of carbon each year. The study warns that tropical and dry climate regions are most vulnerable to this effect. As plastic pollution continues to rise, the ocean's role as a major carbon sink may weaken, making it harder to slow climate change. The findings add a new dimension to the case for reducing plastic waste alongside cutting emissions.
