Polyester fibers from textiles make up 92% of microplastics in snow and 73% in sea ice algae. The ice algae Melosira arctica concentrates particles at 31,000 per cubic meter, ten times the level in surrounding seawater. This gives contaminants a direct entry point into the marine food web. Beyond ecological harm, microplastics reduce the reflectivity of ice and snow, increasing solar absorption and accelerating melting. Ultraviolet exposure and microbial activity cause these particles to release carbon dioxide and methane, directly worsening the Arctic amplification warming loop. Airborne fibers also act as cloud condensation nuclei, potentially shifting precipitation patterns. The authors propose a regulatory strategy modeled on the EU's REACH framework, calling for strict caps on plastic content in manufactured goods and enforceable discharge limits for marine vessels, research stations, and coastal infrastructure. This study highlights how plastic pollution is now a direct climate feedback driver, not just a waste problem.
