Researchers at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota have discovered microbes 4,100 feet underground that can help convert industrial CO2 into solid rock. The process uses enzymes from these extreme organisms to speed up carbon mineralization, turning captured CO2 into calcium carbonate that could be used in concrete and other construction materials. A mobile pilot unit is planned for 2026 to test the technology at industrial sites. This approach offers a more permanent storage solution than traditional underground injection, which risks leakage. The enzyme-based system is being engineered to withstand harsh industrial conditions like high heat and acidity. While the technology is still in early stages, it represents a promising path for locking away carbon emissions in a stable, useful form.
