Microalgae turns palm oil waste into energy and products: a look at the research and hurdles

New research shows microalgae can treat that wastewater, cutting pollutant levels by over 80% while producing biomass that can be turned into biodiesel, fertilizer, animal feed, and cosmetics ingredients. The same process also captures CO2, with 1 kg of microalgae biomass absorbing about 1.83 kg of carbon dioxide. This fits the circular economy model where waste becomes a resource instead of a pollution problem. But the technology is not ready for wide industrial use yet. Lab results are strong, but scaling up faces real cost and production hurdles. The article notes that microalgae have 10 to 50 times higher photosynthetic efficiency than land plants, which helps growth speed. Still, turning that into a working system at palm oil mill scale requires more investment and process refinement. For now, the research from BRIN and Diponegoro University shows promise, but the gap between lab and field remains the main barrier.
