BRIN and PT Alam Semesta Integra have launched the Olympus Apollo 1.0 photobioreactor in Jakarta. The device uses microalgae to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, aimed at supporting decarbonization in urban areas. ANTARA Foto documented the launch on October 8, 2026. The technology represents biological carbon capture applied at a local scale. While details on capture capacity, energy use, and maintenance are not yet public, the project shows growing interest in compact, nature-based options for cities. For carbon market observers, the open question is whether systems like this can generate verifiable CO2 reduction credits or whether they remain limited to local air quality and awareness benefits.
