Michigan's Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has awarded nearly $1.9 million to five projects studying industrial decarbonization across the state. Recipients include Bell's Brewery, Ford's Michigan Assembly Plant, the Detroit Zoo, and a low-carbon cement study led by Michigan Tech. The grants cover process electrification, building upgrades, and other emissions-cutting measures.

Nice to see state money going to feasibility studies rather than just pilot projects. The Ford and Bell's ones should give a real picture of what electrification costs at scale.
Worth watching how these studies handle grid connection constraints. Electrifying a brewery or an auto plant is one thing, but if the local substation can't take the load, the study is just paper.
The MI Healthy Climate Challenge is good, but the real test is whether these studies lead to actual retrofits. The partnership with Great Plains Institute might help with that, but funding for implementation is still unclear.
The low-carbon cement study with Michigan Tech is interesting. Cement is a hard to abate sector, so any data from a real plant helps. Curious what they plan to test.
That Detroit Zoo net-zero plan could be a nice showcase if it actually works. Zoos have odd load profiles, so it might force some creative storage and demand response solutions.
