MGA Thermal has started the engineering design for a 195 megawatt hour electro thermal energy storage project at the Tronox facility in Western Australia. The system uses specialized blocks to store renewable electricity as latent heat, which is then converted back into high grade process steam for industrial use. Scheduled for commercial operation by 2028, the project operates under a heat as a service model. It aims to reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by 38,000 tonnes by replacing fossil fuel based steam generation with a renewable alternative.
