Petgas in Boca del Rio, Mexico, uses pyrolysis to convert non-recyclable plastic into gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and paraffin. The machine processes about 1.5 tons of plastic per week and produces 356 gallons of fuel. Once started with propane, the process becomes self-sustaining using gas from the pyrolysis itself. The key debate is whether this counts as recycling or just a different way to burn fossil carbon. Since most plastic is made from fossil fuels, burning the end product still releases CO2. Environmental groups like NRDC argue that fuel production and combustion should not be labeled as recycling. Petgas focuses on hard to recycle plastics and has donated fuel to local services. But without independent lifecycle analysis comparing this approach to mechanical recycling, landfill, or waste reduction, the net climate impact remains unclear. This technology may help manage plastic waste in the short term but does not solve the root problem of disposable plastic production.
