Metsä Group wins EUR 21 million aid for wood-based CO2 capture plant at Rauma pulp mill
news.cision.comFinland's Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has awarded Metsä Group EUR 21 million in reverse auction aid for a planned carbon dioxide capture plant at the Rauma pulp mill. The facility would capture 100,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2 per year from the recovery boiler's flue gases. The CO2 would go to customers making e-fuels, with the company saying that avoids emissions equal to roughly 30,000 passenger cars per year. The aid is only paid if the investment goes ahead. An investment decision is not expected before early 2027, and the project still needs an environmental permit, completed engineering, and enough market demand. Metsä Group calls the support a key prerequisite for building what it describes as an entirely new industrial value chain. The reverse auction structure means the grant went to projects requiring the least aid per tonne of capture capacity. That makes the award notable for how public money is being used to test early-stage carbon capture and e-fuel markets.
