Metro Germany is rolling out a new tool that calculates the product carbon footprint (PCF) for individual items, giving customers a direct way to compare emissions across products. The tool is aimed at restaurant chains and hotels that face strict sustainability reporting rules. Metro says it will also use the data to evaluate suppliers and adjust its sourcing to meet its own climate targets. The company acknowledges that the calculations may have some deviation from actual emissions, but the move marks a shift from average CO2 estimates to product-level data. In the long term, Metro plans to expand the tool to cover entire shopping baskets and possibly roll it out in other countries. This kind of granular carbon data could help buyers make more informed decisions and push suppliers to lower their footprints.
