Metacon Wins EU Funding for Biogas to High-Purity Green Hydrogen Project
renewableenergymagazine.comSweden's Metacon has received EU funding for PUREHY2+, a project that aims to turn biogas into high-purity green hydrogen while capturing carbon dioxide on site. The work will run through Metacon's Greek subsidiary and build on an earlier semi-pilot unit in Greece, the first of its kind in the country. The project budget is around 1.63 million euros over 36 months, with public funding covering 80% of Metacon's share. Biogas producers already process organic waste at thousands of European sites. If the technology works, those plants could add hydrogen as a second product without relying on new electricity-intensive electrolysis. The target purity is above 99.97%, and the CO2 stream is separated during production. The main open question is whether the hydrogen can be produced at a cost that makes sense outside grant support, and what happens to the captured CO2.
