Meta signs multi-year deal with Fortera for low-carbon cement and environmental attribute credits
facilitiesdive.comMeta has signed a multi-year agreement with low-carbon cement maker Fortera to support construction of a plant in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri. The deal gives Meta access to environmental attribute credits tied to 200,000 tons of cement production, plus a supply of lower-carbon cement for its own projects. Fortera says its process uses captured CO2 and cuts cement emissions by about 70% compared with traditional production. The agreement is part of a broader pattern of tech companies using long-term offtake deals to help industrial startups get financing. Meta previously signed a similar deal for low-carbon iron from Electra. The company's data center emissions rose 22% in 2024, so these purchases are one way it is trying to address the carbon footprint of its construction and operations. For Meta, the deal connects demand for low-carbon building materials with domestic supply in regions where it is building. For the cement industry, it shows that buyers are willing to commit to multi-year volumes, which is often what lenders need to see before funding new plants.
