Meta has signed a multi-year agreement to purchase environmental attribute certificates (EACs) from MacroCycle Technologies, a startup producing recycled PET from hard-to-recycle plastic waste. The deal covers output from MacroCycle's first commercial plant in the Southeastern U.S., which will produce 5,000 tonnes of recycled PET per year. For Meta, this adds to its strategy of using procurement agreements to drive down supply chain emissions, which make up 99% of its reported GHG footprint. The broader context: U.S. PET recycling rates have slipped to 30.2% in 2024, while rPET imports hit a record 23% of domestic supply. MacroCycle's solvent-based process aims to handle contaminated and mixed waste streams that mechanical recycling struggles with. This agreement gives the startup long-term demand to help finance plant construction, and it mirrors Meta's earlier efforts with lower-carbon cement and steel. While 5,000 tonnes is small, the company plans future plants up to 50,000 tonnes annually, and the EAC structure could become a template for scaling circular plastics.
