MacroCycle, a Cambridge startup, has developed a solvent-based process to recycle PET plastic that cuts emissions by 80% compared to virgin PET. Meta has agreed to purchase environmental attribute credits from the company, providing revenue to help fund its first commercial plant in the U.S. The demonstration plant will produce 5,000 metric tons of recycled plastic per year, targeting textile waste which currently has a recycling rate of just 0.5%. Meta hopes this deal will help create a market for low-carbon materials in its supply chain, especially for packaging and hardware. This is Meta's first such EAC purchase. MacroCycle aims to produce recycled textiles domestically at competitive prices, potentially reviving a U.S. industry that has shrunk by 85% over the past 25 years.
