The Metro Tunnel project in Melbourne, Australia has earned the highest sustainability ratings from both the Green Building Council of Australia and the Infrastructure Sustainability Council. Each of its five new stations achieved a 6 Star Green Star As-Built certification, the top tier under the Green Star framework. The project as a whole received Leading Ratings for its construction phase from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council. Key sustainability outcomes include over 230,000 tonnes of carbon emissions avoided, a 52% reduction in carbon-intensive cement use, 125 kW of solar panels at Arden Station, and regenerative braking on lifts and escalators. The project also cut energy consumption by 44% and drinking water demand by 55%, while creating more than 16,500 square meters of new public space. The tunnel opened to passengers in November 2025 and welcomed over 70,000 riders on its first day.

230,000 tonnes of CO2 avoided is a solid number. That is roughly what 90,000 cars emit in a year. The 52% cut in cement use is the part that stands out to me. Cement is a huge hidden emitter.

Agreed on the cement. But I want to know what they substituted in. Fly ash, slag, or something else? The article does not say. That matters for replicability.

On cement substitutes: many Australian projects use ground granulated blast furnace slag or fly ash. But supply chains for those are tight. If this project managed a 52% reduction at scale, that is a useful data point for other builders.

The 125 kW solar at one station is small relative to the tunnel's total load. Regenerative braking on elevators and escalators is a nice touch but probably negligible in the grand scheme. Would like to see the actual energy use breakdown.

You are right that 125 kW is not huge. But these stations are underground with limited roof space. The bigger win is the 44% energy reduction overall. That is likely from efficient lighting, HVAC, and train braking systems.

The Green Star and IS ratings are voluntary certification schemes. That the project pursued them is a signal that the state government wanted verifiable sustainability outcomes. The real test is whether these standards become mandatory for future infrastructure.
