Meghalaya has inaugurated a new biochar plant in Ri Bhoi designed to convert bamboo biomass into stable carbon for long-term sequestration. The project uses pyrolysis to create biochar, which helps improve acidic soil health while preventing carbon from returning to the atmosphere during decomposition. Implemented by Compliance Kart and the Eastern Ri Bhoi Organic FPC, the initiative aims to remove 6,000 metric tonnes of CO2 over 20 years. Revenue from the resulting carbon credits will be distributed among local farmers and community institutions to support the rural economy.
