McMaster University Launches Nuclear Engineering Major to Support Canada's Clean Energy Workforce
news.mcmaster.caMcMaster University is introducing a new undergraduate degree in nuclear engineering to address a critical talent shortage in Canada's energy sector. With 30 percent of the nuclear workforce expected to retire in the next decade, the program aims to provide the skilled labor needed for reactor refurbishments and the rollout of small modular reactors (SMRs). Starting in 2027, students can choose from three specialized paths: a standard nuclear engineering degree, a society-focused track, or a management-focused option. These programs leverage McMaster's existing research reactor and facilities to prepare graduates for roles in low-carbon power generation and medical science.
