MCi Carbon has opened Myrtle, the first fully integrated industrial carbon refinery, on Kooragang Island in Newcastle, Australia. The facility uses mineral carbonation to turn CO2 emissions and waste rock like steel slag into carbon-embedded materials for concrete, plasterboard, and paint. The process can cut net emissions in hard-to-abate sectors by up to 90% and locks carbon permanently at the molecular level. Unlike traditional carbon capture that stores CO2 underground, Myrtle treats emissions as a feedstock for profitable products. The plant can accept different CO2 streams and mineral inputs, making it adaptable for on-site use at industrial plants or as a hub for regional emitters. MCi is running a validation campaign with RHI Magnesita aimed at building a commercial plant in Austria by 2030. The project has received over AUD $80 million in government and private funding.
