McCoy Contractors implemented an on-site concrete batching plant for a large distribution center project in Doncaster. By producing concrete on-site, the company eliminated approximately 65,000 miles of vehicle travel and reduced CO2 emissions by an estimated 130 tonnes. Beyond the carbon savings, the on-site plant improved project resilience by removing dependency on external delivery schedules and weather-related logistics. The project involved pouring 26,000 cubic meters of concrete, which would have otherwise required over 3,000 truckloads.

Cutting out 3,250 truck trips is a huge win for the site logistics. I wonder what the setup cost for the plant was compared to the per-cubic-meter cost of ready-mix. Usually, the payback happens fast on projects this size.

The 130t saving is a good start, but it only covers transport. The real carbon win would be using low-carbon cement blends in that on-site plant. Without knowing the mix design, we are just optimizing the logistics, not the material.

The weather resilience point is the most practical part of this. Waiting on concrete trucks in the UK is a nightmare for timelines. Did they use an electric batching plant or is this still running on diesel generators?

Probably diesel. Most of these mobile plants are. Still, 65,000 miles off the road is a concrete number we can actually track.
