MBB Airport in Tripura moves toward carbon neutrality with solar expansion and green initiatives

Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala is advancing its goal of carbon neutral operations by expanding solar power capacity and adopting other sustainability measures. The airport now runs entirely on renewable energy as of 2025, replacing coal and diesel sources. A 250 kW rooftop solar plant commissioned in 2019 has generated roughly 220,000 units of electricity, and a new 60 kW installation added this year has produced around 76,000 units. Plans for a 1,600 kW ground-mounted solar project by 2027 aim to generate about 2.1 million units annually and cut electricity costs by nearly 2 crore rupees. Alongside solar expansion, the airport has upgraded passenger facilities including Digi Yatra contactless travel, free Wi-Fi, EV charging stations, and a book borrowing service. Passenger traffic has nearly doubled to 1.5 million in 2025-26, and aircraft movements rose to about 11,000 annually. The airport is equipped for international flights with immigration and customs facilities. These steps show how regional airports can reduce emissions while handling growing demand.
