MBB Airport Agartala targets zero carbon emissions with solar expansion and green energy procurement

MBB Airport in Agartala is working toward zero carbon emissions by expanding its solar capacity and switching to renewable electricity. The airport currently operates a 250 kW rooftop solar plant installed in 2019 and a 60 kW facility added in 2026. A larger 1,600 kW ground-mounted solar plant is planned for 2027, which the airport says will generate about 21 lakh units of power and cut electricity costs by roughly Rs 2 crore annually. Since 2025, the airport has stopped buying electricity from coal and diesel sources and now sources only green energy. The airport director also noted that the facility is ready for 24-hour and international operations, with infrastructure like immigration counters and customs already in place. Passenger traffic has nearly doubled from 8 lakh in 2014-15 to 15 lakh in 2025-26, and the new terminal can handle up to 30 lakh passengers per year.
