Mazda demonstrated a mobile carbon capture system that captures CO2 from vehicle exhaust using a zeolite adsorbent, then releases it with exhaust heat and stores it in a tank. In a 24 hour race, the system captured and stored 804 grams of CO2, up from 84 grams in an earlier trial. The company says the captured CO2 could be used in greenhouse farming or turned into carbon based materials. Mazda is using carbon neutral hydrotreated vegetable oil as fuel alongside the capture system, aiming for carbon negative operation in a 2026 race. This is early stage tech and the amounts captured are small compared to total vehicle emissions, but it shows a different approach to cutting automotive CO2 beyond electrification.
