Mayr-Melnhof Karton (MM Group) has been running internal life cycle assessments since 2021 and developed a semi-automated meta-model to calculate product carbon footprints. This lets the packaging company share footprint results with customers earlier in the packaging development process, helping brands compare materials and formats faster. The assessments follow the GHG Protocol and ISO 14040, with a focus on circular economy aspects like recycled content and end-of-life pathways. The meta-model is not a substitute for full LCA methodology but makes product footprint data more accessible for ongoing packaging decisions. For procurement teams and brand owners, that means carbon information can be part of material selection from the start, not a one-off study after the fact. The approach still relies on data quality and boundary assumptions, but it points to a practical way to integrate carbon metrics into everyday packaging choices.
