These fungi connect to plant roots, exchanging nutrients for carbon drawn from the atmosphere. Researchers used machine learning on thousands of soil samples to map the network's density. They found these fungi move roughly 4 billion metric tons of carbon each year, equal to 11 percent of global human CO2 emissions. Grasslands account for 40 percent of the predicted fungal biomass, not tropical rainforests as many might assume. This matters for carbon accounting and land protection strategies. Only 5 percent of fungal biodiversity hot spots currently fall inside protected areas. The maps from this study give policymakers a new tool to identify where soil carbon storage is most active and where conservation could deliver the biggest climate benefit.
