Masdar has signed a new agreement with Azerbaijan Green Energy Company to expand its renewable energy work in Azerbaijan. The plan includes growing the 230MW Garadagh solar plant by at least 350MW, adding up to 200MWh of battery storage, and developing a 100MW round the clock clean energy project. The same announcement confirms financial close on the 315MW Neftchala solar project with SOCAR Green. Masdar says that project will power around 140,000 homes and cut carbon emissions. With Garadagh running since 2023 and a portfolio above 1.2GW, this is a concrete sign that Azerbaijan's solar buildout is moving into storage and firming territory.

Good to see Masdar moving beyond a single project in Azerbaijan. The Garadagh expansion plus 200MWh of storage is the interesting part, storage is where the economics get real. Neftchala hitting financial close means actual construction, not just another memorandum.

Anyone know if the 100MW round the clock project is paired with the storage or separate? Round the clock claims depend on how much firming capacity you actually build. 200MWh on a 100MW plant is only two hours. That does not make it round the clock unless there is hydro or gas backing.

Fair point. The announcement does not say what backs the 100MW. SOCAR Green is involved, so gas backing would not be a surprise. If they count gas as round the clock clean energy, that is a different story than solar plus storage.

The 140,000 homes figure for Neftchala is a bit loose, but the financial close is the real signal. Masdar now has a 1.2GW+ portfolio in Azerbaijan and Garadagh is already running. This one is worth watching for how storage actually gets deployed.
