Maruti Suzuki launches India's first flex-fuel Wagon R: What it means for ethanol adoption and emissions

Maruti Suzuki has launched India's first flex-fuel passenger car, the Wagon R Flex Fuel, capable of running on any blend from pure petrol to E100 (100% ethanol). The vehicle was unveiled with government ministers and is part of a broader push to cut crude oil imports and carbon emissions. The car uses modified fuel system components to handle ethanol's corrosive properties. Adoption depends on building out ethanol fueling infrastructure. The government plans 50 to 100 E85 dispensing stations initially along the Delhi-NCR and Mumbai-Pune-Nagpur corridors, expanding to about 500 stations by end of 2026. Maruti is also investing in CBG plants, EVs, and hydrogen as part of a multi-pathway clean mobility strategy. For the carbon markets and climate policy audience, this launch tests whether flex-fuel can serve as a practical bridge technology in India. The key unknowns are actual well-to-wheel emissions reductions, ethanol supply chain sustainability, and how quickly the fueling network scales to make these cars a real alternative to standard petrol vehicles.
