Mapping Global Peatlands for Carbon Storage and Climate Goals
insideecology.comPeatlands cover a small fraction of Earth's land but store nearly a third of all soil carbon. When these ecosystems are drained for agriculture or development, they release massive amounts of CO2, contributing up to 10% of annual human caused emissions. Recent research highlights a critical gap in our knowledge, as many tropical peatlands remain unmapped and unaccounted for in national climate inventories. Improving these maps is essential for accurate carbon accounting and the successful restoration of degraded lands.
