From the 1980s to 2010, over 12,000 square kilometers of mangroves were cleared for fish farms and coastal development. Since 2010, however, net losses have dropped to around 849 square kilometers, with natural regeneration outpacing deforestation in many regions. Mangroves store up to five times more carbon per hectare than land-based forests and provide critical coastal protection against storms and tsunamis. The recovery is driven by stronger legal protections, increased public awareness after disasters like the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and improved satellite monitoring that captures regrowth earlier. The Niger Delta remains a hotspot of mangrove destruction due to oil pollution, and tropical cyclones continue to cause periodic losses. For carbon markets and climate policy, this is a significant data point. Mangrove restoration and conservation are increasingly recognized as high-integrity blue carbon projects. The study's finding that closed-canopy mangroves have grown by nearly 20% since the 1980s suggests that existing projects may be delivering measurable carbon sequestration benefits.
