A new study from Tulane University analyzed four decades of satellite data and found that mangrove forests are no longer in net decline. For the past 16 years, gains have outpaced losses. The net loss over the full 40-year period is only about 1%, far better than previous estimates. Much of the recovery is happening naturally as abandoned shrimp farms and coastal mudflats are recolonized. Mangroves store large amounts of carbon in their waterlogged soils, making their recovery a meaningful nature-based climate solution that does not require new technology or government spending. The recovery is fragile. A single extreme freeze in Texas in 2021 reversed years of northward mangrove expansion in days. Young forests also need time to build up the deep carbon-rich soils of mature systems. Deforestation continues in some regions where coastal land is valuable for development. The researchers say the most effective intervention is simply stopping deforestation, which prevents the release of long-stored carbon and allows natural accumulation to continue. Protecting sediment flows from rivers is also critical for new mangrove habitat formation.
