Manchester 2038 net zero target at risk as carbon budget exceeded, £100m climate projects planned
aol.comManchester's plan to reach net zero by 2038 is under pressure after a new report shows the city has already used more than its total carbon budget. Emissions fell 23% since 2018, well short of the 55% reduction needed to stay on track. The city emitted 1.74 million tonnes of CO2 in 2024, nearly double the annual target. To speed things up, Manchester has identified around £100m in near-term projects and £1bn in wider schemes. The plan includes installing more than 50,000 heat pumps by 2030, retrofitting nearly 80,000 homes, increasing public transport and active travel, and switching 28,000 more vehicles to electric. Council officials admit the pace of decarbonisation is not fast enough, but climate advisers say the 2038 goal is still reachable.
