Malta International Airport is investing 12.5 million euros to upgrade its electrical infrastructure, allowing parked aircraft to draw power directly from the national grid. The project replaces diesel-powered ground power units with 35 hatch-pit systems and mobile battery units, targeting a reduction of 1,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. Completed by 2028, the upgrade includes five new medium-voltage substations and a peak capacity of 7.5 MVA. The initiative is co-financed by the EU through the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility to support the decarbonization of the European transport sector.
