Maldives launches $100 million electric hydrofoil water taxi network for sustainable island travel and carbon neutral tourism

The Maldives is rolling out a $100 million electric hydrofoil water taxi network in partnership with Navier and JIH Global Investment. Up to 100 vessels will connect airports, resorts, and local islands, cutting emissions from the country's heavy reliance on diesel boats. The first five boats are due within a year, with full deployment by 2029. Each electric hydrofoil has a 75 nautical mile range on battery power and 150 nautical miles in hybrid mode, reducing fuel use and noise while protecting coral reefs from wake erosion. This project is part of the Maldives' broader push toward carbon neutrality in a nation where tourism drives the economy and transportation is a major emissions source. For travelers, the boats offer premium seating, air conditioning, and Starlink Wi-Fi. For residents, better inter-island access to healthcare and jobs is a practical benefit.
