Malaysian offshore CCS project Duyong moves to geophysical survey phase with Petronas, TotalEnergies, Mitsui

Petronas and its partners TotalEnergies and Mitsui are advancing the Duyong carbon capture and storage project offshore Peninsular Malaysia. A geophysical site survey is set to start soon using the vessel Cassandra 5, with completion scheduled for September 1. The project plans to capture CO2 onshore and pipe it for injection into the mature Duyong field. The project recently signed a Key Principles Agreement in July 2025 to move into front-end engineering design. All work follows Malaysia's new CCUS Act 2025. If successful, Duyong would be a first-of-its-kind integrated CCS solution for industries in the Asia Pacific region. The permit for assessment was awarded last November by the MyCCUS Agency.

Good to see this moving past the announcement phase. A geophysical survey is real groundwork. Still early though, FEED is not FID.

The KPA in July is interesting. That is a pretty fast turnaround from permit to FEED prep. Wonder what the storage capacity estimate looks like for Duyong.

Anyone know the pipeline distance from onshore capture to the injection site? That is a big cost driver for these projects. Also curious about the injection rates planned.

Three big players on this. Petronas knows the geology, TotalEnergies has CCS experience from Europe, Mitsui brings the offtake side. Could actually work.

The CCUS Act 2025 is key here. Without a clear regulatory framework these projects stall. Malaysia is trying to get ahead of the regional CCS race. Worth watching how the liability and long-term monitoring rules shake out.
