Malaysia's Energy Transition Ministry has launched the Large Scale Solar 6 (LSS6) program, aiming to add 2,500 megawatts of solar capacity paired with 1,250 megawatts of battery energy storage. The program targets full commercial operation by December 31, 2029, with projects focused in the southern region of Peninsular Malaysia where electricity demand is growing fastest. The government expects RM13 billion to RM15 billion in private investment and 15,000 to 20,000 jobs during construction. LSS6 includes three packages: an open tender for 2,200 MW solar plus 1,100 MW storage, a Bumiputera package for 300 MW solar plus 150 MW storage, and a smaller 150 MW solar-only program for Bumiputera firms. Bidders using domestically manufactured solar panels will get priority. The program is projected to cut CO2 emissions by 2.6 million tonnes per year once operational.

2.5 GW solar plus 1.25 GW BESS is a solid chunk. The 2029 target is far out but at least they are coupling storage from the start instead of retrofitting later.

The southern focus makes sense given demand growth there. But 2029 is a long timeline. I wonder if the grid interconnection studies are already done or if that will stretch things further.

The domestic solar module preference is interesting. Could help build local manufacturing but might also limit competition and push prices up. Need to see the bidding terms.

2.6 million tonnes CO2 per year is a decent claim. Would be good to see the baseline they used. Is that against grid average or gas displacement?

RM13-15 billion investment is big for Malaysia. The Bumiputera set-aside packages might slow things down if there aren't enough qualified local firms ready to bid.

Smaller 10-30 MW projects for Bumiputera firms without BESS could work if they have good financing. But no storage means they are just feeding the grid during daylight hours.
