Malaysia plans to launch its Green Bunkering Regulatory Roadmap (GBRR) during Malaysia Maritime Week 2026. The roadmap, developed with Australia's Partnerships for Infrastructure, targets 40% low-carbon maritime fuel by 2050. LNG is positioned as a bridge fuel, leveraging Malaysia's existing natural gas infrastructure, but the plan must address methane slip and define what counts as low-carbon across the full fuel lifecycle. Shipowners and ports face major infrastructure decisions. While LNG offers near-term emissions reductions, green methanol and ammonia are longer-term solutions, as seen with Sibu's planned methanol hub. The roadmap needs clear milestones, financing mechanisms for retrofits, and carbon pricing or mandates to drive adoption. Without robust lifecycle accounting, the 40% target risks becoming a paper goal.
