Malaysia's communications regulator MCMC has launched LESTARI, a sustainability framework targeting the responsible management of 15 million devices by 2030. The plan focuses on refurbishing, reusing, and recycling electronics to cut e-waste, lower device costs, and expand tech access for lower-income groups. It also aims to benefit 5 million people through social programs and supports Malaysia's net-zero emissions ambition as early as 2050. The framework runs on three pillars: climate and environmental sustainability, social impact and inclusion, and technology and innovation. It includes industry collaboration through the Net Zero & Circularity Alliance, with 15 organizations like CelcomDigi, Maxis, and Telekom Malaysia signed on. Regular monitoring against agreed targets will track progress, tying telecom and media sectors into broader national climate and circular economy goals.
