Malaysia identifies 51.88 MW palm oil mill power potential for biomass and biogas energy

Malaysia's Sustainable Energy Development Authority (Seda) has identified 51.88 megawatts of potential power generation capacity from palm oil mills in Peninsular Malaysia. The announcement came during a parliamentary session where Deputy Minister Abdul Rahman Mohamad also noted that only 1% of the country's biogas potential has been utilized so far. This highlights a significant gap between identified renewable resources and actual deployment. The government is also studying geothermal resources in Ulu Slim, Perak, though exploration drilling is needed to confirm actual capacity. While nuclear energy remains under long-term consideration, the government stated it will prioritize proven renewable sources like solar, biomass, biogas, and hydropower. The palm oil mill power figure is relatively small but represents a practical step in utilizing agricultural waste for grid decarbonization.
