Malaysia CCUS pilot at East Coast steel plant to end by 2027 with cost and emissions data
thestar.com.myMalaysia's Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry says a carbon capture pilot at an East Coast steel plant will wrap up by the end of 2027. The project is meant to produce cost and emissions data for CCUS across the iron and steel supply chain, including smaller manufacturers that need auditable carbon numbers for EU CBAM and ESG reporting. The ministry calls steel a priority because process emissions there are hard to cut with efficiency and renewables alone. Alongside the pilot, MITI points to its i-ESGStart framework and Malaysia Steel Institute training for SMEs that do not have sustainability officers. What the announcement does not specify is the capture rate, storage or utilisation route, or project budget. Those details will decide whether this pilot becomes a template for industrial decarbonisation or just another test site.
