Malaysia Airlines green tax: SAF costs, ticket prices, and aviation emissions explained
klsescreener.comMalaysia Airlines' parent group says it may add a green tax on passengers to offset the high cost of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The group CEO said consumers must be able to afford it, while airlines also need to absorb the expense. Singapore has already announced a government-mandated green aviation tax starting January 2027, with charges varying by destination and cabin class. SAF can cut about 65% of aviation emissions but currently accounts for under 1% of global jet fuel use. Production capacity and feedstock availability remain the main constraints. Malaysia Airlines is also modernizing its fleet with Airbus A330neo and Boeing 737 MAX orders, but the company warns that passing the full SAF cost to passengers could make air travel less attractive.
