Magnetic Nanotube Catalyst Synthesizes Drug and OLED Building Blocks in Water in One Hour
bioengineer.orgA new magnetic nanocatalyst can assemble nitrogen-rich compounds called triarylpyridines and triaryltriazines in water within one hour, with yields up to 99%. Built from carbon nanotubes, iron oxide, and copper iodide, the catalyst can be pulled out with a magnet and reused nine times with minimal loss of activity, offering a greener alternative to methods that rely on toxic solvents and high temperatures. These compounds are used in pharmaceuticals and electronics, including OLEDs and solar cells. The process cuts solvent waste and simplifies scale-up. Researchers reported the work in the Journal of the Saudi Chemical Society.
