Magnetic Fields and Spin States Show Promise for Cheaper Methanol Fuel Cell Catalysts
bioengineer.orgResearchers have shown that applying a magnetic field to FeCoPt alloy catalysts can speed up the methanol oxidation reaction, a key bottleneck in direct methanol fuel cells. By tuning the cobalt content and the spin states of the metals, the team achieved activity up to 7.16 times higher than commercial platinum-on-carbon catalysts, with a 36.8 percent boost in peak current under an external magnetic field in alkaline conditions. The work, published in Advanced Science, offers a different path to reduce platinum poisoning and improve fuel cell performance without relying solely on exotic materials or complex supports. Direct methanol fuel cells use liquid fuel that is easier to store than hydrogen, so better catalysts could help with portable power and backup energy applications. Still, the results are lab-scale and need validation in real cells over longer operating periods.
