Stanford researchers have developed a soil additive called Monti that speeds up enhanced rock weathering to capture atmospheric CO2. The material can capture an average of 2.7 tonnes of carbon per hectare in six months, significantly outperforming traditional crushed basalt. Beyond carbon removal, the additive has shown a 50 percent increase in rice grain yields in greenhouse studies. The startup Mafix is currently scaling production with the goal of removing one megaton of CO2 per year within five years.
