Maersk's Star Container cuts carbon footprint 57% per TEU, joins Algeciras green strategy
dataportuaria.comStar Container Spain, part of Maersk, has joined the Algeciras Port Authority's Green Strategy after reducing its carbon footprint per TEU by 57% between 2023 and 2025, with total emissions down 40%. The company operates container storage and repair facilities at Cortijo Real and uses certified energy and waste management systems. Its carbon accounting for Scope 1 and 2 emissions is validated by Afnor, a third-party certification body. The port initiative now includes 45 organizations working toward shared sustainability goals. Star Container also applies circular economy practices by repairing and reconditioning containers, extending their life and reducing the need for new production. This cuts raw material use, energy consumption, and associated emissions. The move reflects broader efforts by the port community to decarbonize operations and improve efficiency.
