Maccaferri Acquires Iterchimica and Surface Tech to Build Lower Carbon Pavement Materials Business
pulse2.comMaccaferri has acquired Iterchimica and Surface Tech and combined them into a new High-Performance Materials vertical focused on lower carbon, longer lasting pavement. Iterchimica makes asphalt additives that support recycled asphalt content up to 100% and claims around 40% lower CO2 emissions with its Gipave solution. Surface Tech produces aramid fiber reinforcement that can reduce cracking by 30% to 50%, extending pavement life and cutting maintenance material use. The two companies will sit alongside Maccaferri's geosynthetics and engineering business, giving the group an integrated offer from subgrade to surface. Iterchimica is based in Bergamo, Italy, and Surface Tech in San Diego. Both founding teams are reinvesting in the group and staying on to run their businesses. The deals give each company access to Maccaferri's network across more than 130 countries. For buyers and contractors, the practical question is whether the carbon and durability claims hold up under local mix designs and traffic loads. If they do, the acquisitions point toward a broader shift in road construction, where embodied carbon and maintenance frequency start to drive material choices.
