Macau reduced its carbon emissions by 59,167 tonnes in 2025, according to the territory's Environmental Protection Bureau. The drop was driven by a 34.6% increase in electric vehicle registrations, solar photovoltaic installations on public buildings, and greater use of natural gas for power generation. The reduction is equivalent to the annual carbon absorption of 2.95 million trees. Electric vehicles now make up 38.5% of new vehicle registrations in Macau, up from about 2% in 2019 for electric motorcycles. The government also installed solar systems on three public housing blocks and a wastewater treatment plant. Over 87% of Macau's electricity was imported from mainland China in 2025, and the government aims to increase clean energy supply to 50% in 2026. Total environmental spending reached MOP 2.19 billion, or 2.2% of public expenditure.

59 kilotonnes of CO2 is real but small for a place like Macau. The EV share jump from 2% to 36.8% for motorcycles is the actual story. That subsidy scheme worked.

Worth noting 87% of their power comes from the mainland grid. So the emissions drop is partly just buying cleaner power from China, not local generation changes.

MOP 2.19 billion on environmental spending is about 2.2% of public expenditure. That is not huge but not nothing either. Would like to see a breakdown of how much went to transport vs power.
