Macau cuts carbon emissions 59,167 tonnes in 2025 as electric vehicle registrations surge 34.6 percent

Macau reported a 59,167 tonne drop in carbon emissions for 2025, driven mainly by a 34.6 percent increase in electric vehicle registrations to 16,339 units. The share of electric vehicles among new registrations reached 38.5 percent, up from about 34.5 percent in 2019. Electric moped and motorcycle adoption jumped 16 times after a 2022 subsidy program, with 36.8 percent of new motorcycle buyers choosing electric versus 2 percent before the subsidy. The government also installed solar photovoltaic systems on public housing, a ferry terminal, and a wastewater plant. Over 87 percent of Macau's electricity came from mainland China in 2025. The government plans to raise clean energy supply to 50 percent in 2026. Environmental spending hit 2.19 billion patacas, or 2.2 percent of total public expenditure.
