A 5.7 mile section of the M4 near Swindon was repaved using hydrogen powered JCB backhoe loaders, electric planers and rollers, and recycled asphalt. The project cut CO2 emissions by 630 tonnes, a 50% improvement over conventional methods. National Highways' Low Carbon Demonstrator Fund supported the six week project. FM Conway used echelon paving to lay both lanes at once, reducing road closures. Asphalt was recycled from other motorways with mixes containing up to 60% recycled material. Manufacturing was powered by biogas from anaerobic digestion. The recycled asphalt alone saved over 400 tonnes of CO2.

630 tonnes saved on a 6 week job is not huge but the mix of hydrogen, electric, and recycled materials is what makes this interesting. Real world test of multiple low carbon techs at once.

Hydrogen backhoe loader is a novelty but the electric planer and roller matter more for fleet decarbonization. Would like to see charging logistics for the electric gear on a highway job site.

60% recycled asphalt in base courses is the quiet win here. That is a higher percentage than most projects achieve. Biogas for manufacturing also cuts embedded emissions significantly.

National Highways funded this through a demonstrator program. The question is whether these methods get adopted without subsidy. Echelon paving saves time and closures which is a direct cost benefit.

Laser profiling for smoother finish means fewer cracks and longer road life. That is a maintenance carbon saving that the article does not quantify. Worth tracking over the next few years.
